The
club was formed in 1996 and was originally known as the Rotherham Runaways.
Amongst the founding members were Rob Price, Glynn Thompson and of course
the famous or should that be infamous Bully. Their original watering
hole was The Wellington Boot pub in the town centre. After a year or
so the club moved to the Fitzwilliam Arms in nearby Parkgate it then
began to attract members from Barnsley and the Dearne areas. In the
summer of 1999 the fitz underwent a facelift which left us out in the
cold (in the car park actually) new venue time we thought, so the search
was on (landlords beware scooter club on the prowl). After a couple
of ride-outs and one or two verbal exchanges!!! . We decided on The
New Inn at Wath upon Dearne. This is a traditional pub situated on a
busy main road with lots of passing traffic (poseurs or what) .The pub
has strong links with scooterists being a favored haunt of The Wath
Panthers and Dearne Crusaders in the mid seventies, in fact on some
Sunday nights some of the old faces can still be seen propping up the
bar reminiscing about the good old days and how you could pick up a
complete lammy for twenty quid and a packet o' woodbines!! . With Wath
being in the heart of the Dearne Valley the new name was easily sorted
and so the club as we know it was born. In the last eighteen months
or so the club has flourished with new faces turning up from all the
surrounding areas. Being a no subs and card type club it is hard to
get an accurate figure but we must have thirty plus members which always
guarantees a good "crack" on Sunday nights. As a club we try
to attend most major and all local events and will openly support other
clubs in the area and beyond. As a club we have forged close friendships
with other local clubs such as Doncaster A1, Wakefield 3 Lions, Northern
Line, Doncaster Hunters and Barnsley Vikings to name a few. The club
does not have an official number 1 or committee as such so what needs
to be done or sorted usually gets done (eventually) by anyone who can
help at the time. A range of club merchandise is available for members
new and old, pilots jackets, T-shirts, stickers etc with a small percentage
of the cost going into club funds. We are always open to new ideas and
suggestions and try to be democratic about decisions that may affect
the long term stability of the club. Hopeful we have a good solid foundation
on which to build a club we can be proud of for years to come. Finally
and most importantly we try to have FUN, because at the end of the day
isn't that what it's all about.
