SOUTH YORKSHIRE SCOOTER FESTIVAL 2003
“Down the rugby club about 12 ish” Ank said, “I’m tipping they’ll start arriving about 3ish for the Saturday night do”. So down the rugby club we went about 12ish just like he said, and guess what, yeh, the Mad For It lot from Batley were already into it, Tubes, a barbeque big enough to roast a small mammoth, and a camp the size of which warranted planning permission!!……nice one! The sun was shining and the party had commenced, bring it on!!
As the blazing afternoon wore on more and more clubs and solo’s arrived to join in the shenanigans. Tin’s in hand, sausage on the barby, sun in the sky and cricket for our entertainment!!……what more could an English man want for!?….(ok cricket aint strictly my bag either, but it spanks the arse off shoving hot needles in your eye on a Saturday afternoon!!)
Bully was on top form meeting and greeting people from far and wide, together with the combined support of the Yorkshire Alliance clubs as the afternoon dragged itself into a balmy evening, the pre – festival party was shaping up into something bigger and better than we could have ever imagined.
After initial worries over sound systems etc. John came up trumps with something close to the rig The Who used that year at Charlton Athletic Football Club. I’m not saying it was powerful but I swear I saw the streetlights shimmer when he flipped the amp on. Together with the combined efforts of Glyn (A1) Jase (Hudds) and our very own Col Chase, the night bounced along at a frantic pace. The collective did a sterling job; I’d have no problems recommending any of them to anyone for a do. Well-done lads.
Evening slipped into night and night slipped into early hours and finally around 1.30 the sounds slipped into silence, well, all apart from the singing and dancing that ensued on the campsite, at least until daybreak.
Breakfast was served from 7am, and by 8am most of the Dearne Valley crew were setting up for the days events at Wombwell Kart circuit just a couple of miles down the road. Bully and Jase got an extra hour in the sack as they were fronting the ride out from the campsite around 10 o’clock, and what a sight it was when they all appeared on the horizon, it was enough to bring a lump to your throat!
The sun continued to grace us with it’s presence, the dealers were set up and trading, the custom show was filling up nicely, and scooters were having it large round the circuit, this had the makings of a fantastic day, despite the hangovers and lack of kip!
The kid’s area doubled as a picnic area and was going down a storm. Face painting was executed by the girls from the Barnsley Building Society, the proceeds of which went to a local special needs school mini bus appeal. The bouncy castle proved to be a winner as always, and the fire jugglers were just bonkers, they don’t cost a million quid these boys and they add a little something special to any family friendly event.
The raffle came and went and by 3 o’clock it was clear people wanted to make their merry way home, so the custom show proceedings were brought forward (results later). The turnout for the show was unbelievable, 11 categories in total and 2 judges with a wealth of experience in the scootering scene, none of whom have any particular allegiance to a club, so any bias was avoided.
By 4 o’clock the site was almost cleared, everybody knackered, still suffering from the evening before, all sun burnt to buggery, but all wearing a smile. There were times in the weeks prior to the event when we thought we may have bitten off more than we could chew, and yes there are definite lessons to be learnt for next year, like make sure the chuck wagon can cope, sorry for the queue's folks. Also apologies for the lack of patches, they were snapped up within a couple of hours, if anyone wants to get their mitts on one, drop us a line on the website and if there’s enough interest we’ll see about getting some ordered. The lack of a bar was mentioned by a few people and fair comment, however the stadium aint licensed. Also as a club we weren’t entirely sure that alcohol and race circuits were a good ingredients, there was a pub just outside the gates for those that wanted a cooler, but all in all I don’t think an on site bar was missed all that much.
With anything that stray’s from the path of “what’s normal” there are always risks involved, but you people out there made it a proud day to remember for us all in Dearne Valley Scooter Club. Thanks especially to the traders that took a risk on this event, some of our critics said we wouldn’t get more than a couple of hundred punters through the gates, and maybe if it had rained that would have been the case, but hey….it didn’t, and we ended up with close to 800!
Thanks to all our sponsors of the custom show (listed), sponsors of the event particularly Barnsley Building Society, Ron Daley’s, the St. John’s Ambulance people, LCGB, Scooter Restorations, Armando’s, everyone who volunteered there services free, Matty the cameraman who’ll do anything for a bag of cola bottles, the Yorkshire Scooter Alliance for it’s support, particularly Duesy for the website and email stuff, but most of all thanks to you lot for having the faith and turning up. There must be someone I’ve missed, so I apologies profusely and next time you see me at a bar give me a nudge and I’ll sort you a beer……..no honest!!
I’m reluctant to list the clubs in attendance cos that will cost me!!……far too many to mention other than A1 best turned out on Saturday night (as always - Oi Oi!), and Medway Aces furthest travelled (close to 250 miles if my memory serves me!?), once again thanks to all for supporting this weekend.
